# Updating

Replace the old jar with the new one and restart the server. Your files are kept.

## What happens to your files

* **New options are added** with their explanations, in the right place of each file. Your values, comments and order are not changed.
* **A copy of the old file** is saved in `plugins/rnChatGames/backups/` before anything is changed.
* **Options that moved** in a newer version are moved for you (for example, your own words and questions from older versions go into `content/<language>.yml`).
* **Messages you removed** from a game on purpose (so it uses the default one) are not added back.

The console tells what was done, for example:

```
[rnChatGames] Added 2 new option(s) to config.yml: display.win, display.end. Backup of your old file: backups/config-2026-10-14_14-29-30.yml
```

## Update notifications

The plugin checks SpigotMC for a new version when the server starts and every 6 hours. When there is one:

* the console says it once: `A new version of rnChatGames is available: 1.4.0 (you have 1.3.1). Download: https://www.spigotmc.org/resources/139683/`
* players with `rnchatgames.update` (operators by default) get a message with download links a few seconds after joining.

`/rncg version` shows your version and the latest one. To turn the checks off, set `update-checker: false` in `config.yml` (or use `/rncg editor` → General). The text is `update-available` in the [language file](/rnsetups/rnchatgames/configuration/messages.md).

## Things that are never replaced

* `content/<language>.yml`: created only when it does not exist. If you delete it, it is created again with all the built-in words and questions.
* The database (`data/database.db` or your MySQL tables).

{% hint style="info" %}
If a file has a mistake (for example a missing quote), the plugin does not change it: it tells you the line in the console and uses the default values for that file until you fix it.
