# Installation

Requirements, the optional plugins and the first start.

## Requirements

* A **Spigot** or **Paper** server from **1.21.1 to 26.3**, or a fork of Paper such as Purpur or Folia.
* **Java 21** or newer.

That is all rnCombatPvP needs. These plugins are optional and add more:

| Plugin                                                          | What it adds                                                                                                                                                 |
| --------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Vault** with an economy plugin (EssentialsX, CMI, XConomy...) | Money for kills, money stolen from the victim, death and combat log penalties, `[money]` actions and **bounties**. Without it, those parts are skipped. |
| **PlaceholderAPI** | The `%rncombat_...%` [placeholders](/rnsetups/rncombatpvp/reference/placeholders.md), and placeholders of other plugins in rnCombatPvP's texts and commands. |
| **WorldGuard** | [Safe zones](/rnsetups/rncombatpvp/guides/safe-zones.md): regions with `pvp deny` that players in combat can't enter, with the glass wall. |

{% hint style="info" %}
The combat log NPC with the **player's own skin** uses the mannequins added in Minecraft **1.21.9**. On 1.21.1 - 1.21.8 the NPC is a husk wearing the player's head and armor (or you can kill the player instead). See [Combat log and NPCs](/rnsetups/rncombatpvp/guides/combat-log.md).
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
On **Spigot** the plugin downloads the text library it needs (Adventure) from Maven Central the first time it starts. Paper, Purpur and Folia already have it.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="warning" %}
The original **Vault** does not run on **Folia**. On Folia, use a Vault version made for Folia (such as VaultUnlocked) with an economy plugin that runs on Folia. See the [FAQ](/rnsetups/rncombatpvp/reference/faq.md) for WorldGuard on Folia.
{% endhint %}

## Steps

1. Download `rnCombatPvP-1.0.0.jar` and put it in the `plugins/` folder.
2. Restart the server (do not use `/reload`).
3. The plugin creates `plugins/rnCombatPvP/` with its files (see [Files overview](/rnsetups/rncombatpvp/getting-started/files.md)).
4. Open `config.yml` and set `language` to `en` or `es`. Changes apply a few seconds after saving.

The console shows lines like these:

```
[rnCombatPvP] Running on Paper. Combat time 20s, combat log: KILL.
[rnCombatPvP] Data is kept in SQLite (data/combat.db).
[rnCombatPvP] WorldGuard found: regions with pvp deny are safe zones.
```

## First test

You need two accounts (or a friend).

{% hint style="warning" %}
Players who join for the **first time** get **15 minutes of newbie protection** and can't be hit. For the test, end it with `/newbie disable` (each player) or `/newbie remove <player>` (admin).
{% endhint %}

1. Hit the other player. Both of you are in combat: you get a message, a title, the action bar with the time left and a boss bar.
2. Type `/ct` to see the time left, and try `/spawn`: it is blocked while in combat.
3. Log out with one of them while in combat. With `KILL` (the default) the player dies at once and their items drop where they were. With `combat-log.punishment: NPC`, an NPC of that player stays where they were for 20 seconds: kill it, then join again with that account, and the player is dead and their items are on the ground where the NPC died.
